Message from the CEO: JEFFERY K. PATTERSON

Welcome to the Summer 2017 Housing Choice Voucher Program News Update! Whether you’re working or playing outside in the summer, anybody not accustomed to the heat is at risk for a heat-related illness. Take steps to protect yourself with these summer safety tips:

· Take frequent water breaks

· Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15

· Wear appropriate clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat

· When outside in the evenings or other times when there are a lot of mosquitoes present, cover up with long sleeved shirts, pants and socks to prevent bites.

· More than one in five drowning victims are children 14-years-old and younger, and most incidents happen when a child falls into a pool or is left alone in the bathtub. Keep your kids safe in the water and never leave your child unattended.

· Fourth of July is one of the biggest events of the summer, but it can bring an increase in injuries. In 2010, fireworks caused an estimated 15,500 reported fires, including 1,100 structure fires. Celebrate safely this holiday.

· When cooking on the stove, never leave it unattended and keep anything that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, towels or curtains away from the stove top.

· When grilling, place the grill well away from the home (at least 10 feet) and keep children away from the grill area at all times.

· Do not place hot coals from a grill in trash containers.

· Do not tamper with or remove smoke alarms.

· Test smoke alarms every month.

· Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.

Have a safe summer!

Angenette HolinessRESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: ANGENETTE HOLINESS

Six years ago, after Angenette Holiness became a parent, she made the decision to improve her life for herself and her child. She wanted to go to college, but she could not see how it would be possible to go to school full-time and work full-time, so she turned to CMHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) as a stepping stone towards success.

One year after receiving a voucher from CMHA, she decided to take it one step further and enroll in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS). The FSS program assisted her in making a number of goals to achieve in five years with the guidance and assistance from CMHA staff. Five years later, Holiness has significantly increased her credit score, graduated from Lakeland Community College, and enrolled in Cleveland State University to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications.

Recently, Holiness accepted a position as a teacher’s aide for the Cleveland Municipal School District and looking forward, she plans to create a nonprofit organization to assist young women transitioning out of foster care. Continuing her personal growth and development, she is currently looking to purchase her own home.

Earlier this month, Holiness won a scholarship at the NCRC NARHO Conference Awards luncheon and she spoke on a panel at the first Cleveland Housing Hackathon to offer information about HCVP and the FSS program. We are very proud of the accomplishments of Angenette Holiness; she is a true example what success looks like with hard work and dedication.
