Welcome to the Spring 2016 Housing Choice Voucher Program News Update! We invite you to take a look at our 2016 Report to the Community.  This annual report features the individuals, services and programs that make our CMHA community thrive. While proud of our previous accomplishments, we have been looking ahead to this New Year and continuing our work to provide safe, quality, affordable housing to those we service in Cuyahoga County.  To provide high quality service, CMHA and partners need to collect feedback periodically.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank those participants who have participated in recent housing surveys; your willingness to respond only helps our community to progress.

ENERGY SAVING TIPS

SAVING ELECTRICITY

Turn off the lights every time you leave the room. Use task lighting instead of lighting the whole room, use a smaller light, like a desk lamp.

SAVING WATER

Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth.  Take shorter showers try using a timer to keep your showers short, or turn off the water when you’re not using it during your shower.

SAVING GAS

Reduce temperature at night and when the house is unoccupied. Check furnace filters once a month to clean and change as needed.

WHY IS SAVING ENERGY IMPORTANT?

Saving energy is good for the environment: Our planet has limited resources, and it’s important to conserve those resources for our children and future generations.

Saving energy makes us healthier: Reducing energy use helps reduce pollution and carbon in the atmosphere, which makes breathing easier and all of us healthier.

Saving energy is good for our country: By reducing the energy we use, we also can help reduce our dependence on foreign oil, which makes our country and the economy stronger.

Saving energy creates a better place to live: The bottom line is that saving energy makes our lives and our neighborhoods better places to live for us and our families.

For Rent photoLANDLORD SPOTLIGHT: PASSION ARNOLD

Passion Arnold knows what it is like to search for safe, affordable, quality housing on a limited budget.  In the early 2000s, she was taking educational courses and caring for two young daughters.  During that time, Ms. Arnold had applied for what was then known as a Section 8 voucher in Medina County to help her through a challenging financial period.

While the voucher afforded her a chance to live in her own apartment, she said she “had some difficulties finding a landlord that kept the property nice and neat” and showed concern for the residents that lived in the building.  It was this experience that inspired her to one day want to become a landlord herself.

Recently, Ms. Arnold did just that.  She is renting three units to CMHA Housing Choice Voucher Program participants and is in the process of finding more units to rent.  She takes pride in her units and has made improvements such as installing new tiles and countertops and, as a former tenant, she is working to challenge misperceptions about the program she’s encountered.

“If I wouldn’t have had that [Section 8] opportunity, then I wouldn’t have the privileged lifestyle that I live now,” Ms. Arnold says.  She adds that, in her experience, most income as a single mom went toward rent.  “I enjoy that I’m helping someone have a better future for themselves and their kids.”
