Message from the CEO: JEFFERY K. PATTERSON

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) provides opportunities for its member agencies to receive national recognition for their innovative housing and community development projects, programs, and services. I am proud to report that CMHA received 11 Awards of Merit at the NAHRO national conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Among the winning porgrams are the Family Self-Sufficiency Motivational Mixer and Landlord Forum, both of which serve Housing Choice Voucher Program participants and landlords. The award-winning initiatives range from projects that transform neighborhoods to services that change lives. For a complete list of winners, view the CEO message at www.cmha.net.

Denise Johnson, a Housing Choice Voucher Program participant, has graduated from the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program after

participating for only one year. In a short time, after setting goals and attending FSS workshops, she was able to purchase her own home. “I didn’t know anything about purchasing a home, but the financial literacy workshops and advice from the staff really helped,” said Johnson.

Johnson first became aware of the FSS program through the national award-winning E-bus event that took place in partnership between CMHA and Fifth Third Bank. The event offered residents the chance to get financial advice, check their credit report, and receive information on resources to improve credit. “I did not know what my credit was or what I could do with it, but the FSS program helped me to understand how to find out my credit history and how to use it towards buying a home.”

Johnson credits the FSS program for further helping her to both save and pay rent with a fluctuating income since the program made it possible for her to pay into an escrow account towards a down payment. Upon completing the FSS workshops, home ownership classes and finding out that she had great credit, she was immediately ready to buy a home. “I was able to accomplish all of my goals and it didn’t take me 20 years to do it.”

Congratulations to Denise Johnson on graduating from the FSS Program and becoming a homeowner!
